MENENGAGE ALLIANCE PAKISTAN

Subsequent to the MenEngage South Asia consultation held in January 2007 in Nepal, a Pakistan based country network was established with its secretariat first housed in the Gender Justice through Musalihat Anjuman Project (GJTMAP). Later the secretariat was shifted to Rozan till October 2011 and then to AMAL Human Development Network till Dec 2014. Since January 2015, the secretariat is being hosted by Shirakat-Partnership for Development which is a non-governmental, non-profit, non-partisan organization working for equality and social justice.

MEA-P Goals

The MenEngage Alliance Pakistan has set a long term and short term goal as per the agreement
in the 1st core group meeting held on May 21, 2007.

Long Term

1 To engage men and boys in the efforts for gender equality and ending violence.
2 A growing network of NGOs, UN agencies and Government institutions to prevent gender based violence through active involvement of men and boys.

PURPOSE OF ALLIANCE IS TO:

  1. Act as a civil society pressure group on achieving gender equality , promoting health and reducing violence at the global level.
  2. Carry out advocacy for the purpose of institutional, policy and legislative reform, and aim at a just and non-hierarchical society.
  3. Engage men and boys for gender equality and ending violence.
  4. Promote cross regional sharing and linkages by bringing in regional working on the theme of masculinities.
  5. Generate more research on making masculinities visible in various social and behavioral settings, and create opportunities of learning and engagement of men and boys to reflect and challenge all forms of system which contributes to violence, inequality, etc.
  6. Prevent gender based violence through active involvement of men and boys.
  7. Engage in media discourse and provide information for the general public and policy makers.

In Pakistan, the alliance consists of 34 NGOs and 23 individual members whose goal is to promote gender equality and to reduce gender based violence while engaging men and young boys. These include diverse groups working on men & masculinities, gender based violence, violence against women, sexual & reproductive health and rights, HIV and AIDS, ending violence against women, economic empowerment of women, child sexual abuse, human rights, fatherhood, youth rights, rural development, democracy, peace building, conflict resolution and transformation and livelihoods in development as well as humanitarian response.
